JDSU Introduces New Agile Optical Network Products at OFC/NFOEC
-
3-03-2006
San Jose, California, March 3, 2006 – JDSU today introduced three new optical communications products, expanding its set of solutions for the fast-growing Agile Optical Network (AON). These products – including new modulator, switching and attenuation solutions – are key building blocks for the AON and will be on display at OFC/NFOEC 2006, booth number 2323, in the Anaheim (CA) Convention Center on March 7-9.
Launched on February 9, 2006, JDSU’s AON strategy addresses the need for more agile, dynamically reconfigurable networks to support the reliable and cost-effective deployment of triple play consumer and converged business services. According to Ovum-RHK, the market for optical networking modules is rapidly transitioning from fixed to agile solutions. The agile optical networking penetration of the overall segment is expected to grow from 20 percent in 2004 to more than 60 percent in 2008.
JDSU introduced two new Agile Optical Component products and a new solution for its Agile Optical Switch portfolio, including:
ES VOA Series – JDSU has introduced a new series of electrostatic, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)-based variable optical attenuators for a cost-effective means of power control in Agile Optical Networks. JDSU’s new ES VOAs feature low wavelength dependent loss, small form factor packaging and high reliability.
10 Gb/s Dual Parallel and Dual Drive MZ Modulators – JDSU’s new 10 Gbit/s Dual Parallel and Dual Drive Mach-Zehnder (DPMZ and DDMZ) modulators are designed to enable more efficient wavelength transmission over longer distances across the Agile Optical Network. The DPMZ modulator is ideally suited for use in long haul and ultra long haul optical transport applications utilizing spectrally efficient modulation. The DDMZ was developed for long reach and very long reach metro networks as well as long haul networks.
MPS – JDSU has added the Modular Optical Protection Switch (MPS) circuit pack to its set of Agile Optical Switch solutions. The MPS is a modular, managed subsystem that independently monitors and protects up to eight optical circuits. If optical power fades below user defined thresholds on any of its circuits, the MPS autonomously switches to an alternate path within 15 milliseconds, substantially enhancing the reliable performance of the Agile Optical Network. Featuring local and remote management access via TL1/SNMP or through an intuitive graphical user interface, the MPS circuit pack is readily integrated into the Agile Optical Network. It is generally available and is currently shipping to a tier-one global system manufacturer.
“JDSU is pleased to introduce these innovative building blocks for the Agile Optical Network,” said Mike Ricci, senior vice president of JDSU’s Components and Modules product group. “We will continue to build our portfolio addressing the AON, a strategic imperative for the fast, cost effective deployment of IP-based broadband communications services.”
JDSU’s portfolio of Agile Optical Components and Agile Optical Switches are key building blocks of the AON, a dynamically reconfigurable DWDM network designed to accelerate triple-play service deployment and enable advanced wavelength applications at significantly reduced cost. JDSU’s Agile Optical Components provide the basis for spectrally efficient DWDM transmission using dispersion tolerant modulation, channel monitoring, wavelength switching, remote power control and dynamic channel selection. In addition to the MPS, JDSU’s Agile Optical Switch portfolio includes a set of ROADM solutions that provide the flexibility to remotely reconfigure any or all wavelengths in an AON, reducing time-to-service, simplifying the network and streamlining planning and management.
