JDSU Unveils First-of-Kind FTTx Test Capabilities
3-02-2006
San Jose, California, March 2, 2006 – JDSU today announced the release of the Very Long Range (VLR) OTDR module for its T-BERD and MTS-8000 platform, combining several new features into one first-of-its-kind OTDR tester for access and metro network optical applications. The module design, which introduces first-of-its kind fiber network characterization capabilities, complements the range of OTDR modules within the T-BERD/MTS-8000 platform and further enables service providers to rapidly, reliably and cost-effectively deploy network services in one convenient package. The product will be on display at CeBIT 2006 in Hannover, Germany, March 9-16 (booth B20, Hall 13) and OFC/NFOEC 2006 in Anaheim, California, March 5-10 (booth 2323).
In response to customer desire to highly reduce installation and maintenance costs for FTTx and metro networks, JDSU has optimized critical OTDR parameters such as speed, dead zone and dynamic range. The JDSU VLR OTDR module not only offers the industry’s first test solution to combine all three functions, it provides unique performance features, including a 0.1s refresh time, 0.8m event dead zone, 4m attenuation dead zone, and the industry’s first commercially-available, four-wavelength 45 dB OTDR. Also included is 45 dB dynamic range functionality, making the module ideal for qualifying any type of optical network – from very short haul to long haul – and for optical networks where qualification was previously not possible, such as very short fiber distances.
“This new module enables JDSU’s customers to significantly reduce the time it takes to test and troubleshoot their networks,” said Enzo di Luigi, general manager of JDSU’s fiber optics Test and Measurement group. “Our customers will now be able to qualify and troubleshoot FTTx network problems they were unable to investigate before, and with unprecedented accuracy.”
About JDSU’s T-BERD/MTS Optical Testers
Combining multiple test capabilities with unprecedented levels of field modularity, JDSU's T-BERD/MTS-8000 is a scalable field platform for provisioning and maintaining short-haul, long-haul, FTTx, Metro, CWDM, transport, data and DWDM networks. Advanced modularity enables the T-BERD/MTS-8000 to integrate options for video microscope, VFL, light source, power meter, and optical talk set with application modules for SONET, SDH, Ethernet, multi-mode and single mode OTDRs, PMD, spectral attenuation, CD, WDM, and single-port and dual-port OSA. Compatibility with more than 10,000 field-proven units already deployed worldwide by every major telecommunications network operator enables easy migration to new network technologies while continuing to reduce expenses.

Fun Fact:
A matrix code, also known as a 2D barcode or simply a 2D code, is a two-dimensional way of representing information. It is similar to a linear (1-dimensional) barcode, but has more data representation capability.
